Past Shows

My works have been featured in several shows and added to various private collections internationally. Here are snapshots from a selection of shows.

Tensity

The Substation SeptFest 2022: uproot/rootless
72-13, Singapore, 1 – 4 September 2022

Tensity ponders the relational dynamics of power and man in the contemporary world.

Central to Rofi’s narrative are human figures thematically presented in states of flux. Bold colours, bold textures, and even bolder strokes are his tools, to capture today’s tensions brought on by emerging political conflicts, a new war, a worsening climate crisis, the crippling global pandemic and the barrage of media. Rofi presents his figures bent, damaged and censored projecting the metaphorical tension between power and cause.

Working in resonance with his paintings are sculptures that further the artist’s impressions of man’s struggle with choice, freedom and responsibility.

SeeSaw

The Straits Gallery, Singapore
1 – 4 September 2022

Just like how a seesaw is in a constant state of flux, the self is perpetually changing as it’s always influenced by our environment. Our identity morphs, adapts to, and fluctuates with our surroundings, taking little pieces of others and the energy from spaces into ourselves as we go along. As people, we are continuously evolving. This raises the question, how much of our original self is left if we constantly absorb information into our bodies? We experience tensions in life whenever we interact with the world, whether through another person or the environment, we are inhabiting.

With each individual approaching the changes in their lives differently, SeeSaw is an exhibition where the artists confront, amend and cope with tensions and conflicts in their daily lives. The artists delve into the tension and conflict present in that question. Though their works differ in medium, a clear argument can be seen.

Rofi presents to the viewer symbolic relational dynamics between power and men within the world. Human figures, writhing with bold colours and brushstrokes, are used as metaphorical representations of the tensions between power and its causes. States of flux in his works capture further tensions present in our current global socio-political climate.

State of Flux

Volvo Art Loft, Singapore
11 – 31 January 2013

Volvo Art Loft is pleased to present State of Flux, featuring high energy artworks comprising paintings, drawings and an installation piece that explore contemporary Singapore’s struggle to redefine itself moving forward.

As the title suggests, the conversation to create a new Singapore is turning raucous. The mainstream is rocked by cacophonous dissenting voices and perpetual conflict within a once quiet nation, now empowered by social media. The din is reaching deafening, numbing levels. Amid all that noise, it’s tough getting a reasoned word in. Can one sift the gems through all that noise? Will more control and regulation help? With censorship now a blunt tool, how relevant would such policies that hinge their assumptions upon an obeisant society be?

In State of Flux, Rofi invites you to ponder these questions and more.

Fragments of My Identity

The Substation Gallery, Singapore
21 April – 7 May 2011

Identity defines what we are and who we are, differentiates us, and distinguishes us. But while we see it as central to our being — personal and instinctive — the issue of identity is also very much part of public discourse. Why is identity so contentious, at the same time, so crucial to how we define ourselves?

In modern and cosmopolitan Singapore, we are constantly grappling with this issue of identity. How to define it? Based on race? Based on mindset – Asian, not Western? Based on our roles in society? Based on our collective values as Singaporeans or based on our personal values and beliefs? Or, based on who we see ourselves as – self-described?

Transcript: (2:05 – 3:10)

His name is Rofi and he is also having an exhibition in Washington DC right now, and he’s expressing his political, social, cultural views through his mixed media paintings.

Very powerful work, very powerful... It's three-dimensional, he uses of course the metal fence which when you see in person you actually get a great sense of what it is that he's doing. It doesn’t always translate well on images but in person it's more striking. And of course, it's about one's ability to be able to communicate and not be silenced. It's about censorship, very much, (and democracy)... absolutely.
